The Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES)

This questionnaire consists of twenty-eight questions about experiences that you may have in your daily life. The intent is to measure how often you have these experiences. It is important, however, that your answers show how often these experiences happen to you when you are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

To answer the questions, you can print out the self-test below.  Then please consider to what degree the experience described in each question applies to you and circle the percentage of the time you have the experience. If you want, you can write any number between 0 and 100 to the right of the scale.  At the end of this self-test you can calculate your own unique score and gain a rough understanding of how your dissociative experiences compare to the rest of the population that has been measured by this test.

Score the Quiz

This screening test for Dissociative Identity Disorder is scored by totaling the number answered for each question (from 0% to 100%) and then dividing by 28.  This yields an average score, which will be in the range of 0 to 100.

Generally speaking, the higher the DES score, the more likely it is that the person has DID.  In most studies the average DES score for a person with DID is in the 40s, with a standard deviation of about 20, so roughly 15% of clinically diagnosed DID patients score below 20 on the DES.

The DES is not a diagnostic instrument. It is a self-screening instrument. High scores on the DES do not prove that a person has a dissociative disorder; they only suggest that clinical assessment for dissociation is warranted. People experiencing DID do sometimes have low scores, so a low score does not rule out DID.

Always consult with a trained mental health professional if you are experiencing depressive feelings and/or difficulties in your daily functioning that cause you anxiety or worry.

This test is meant to be used as a starting point, not as a diagnostic tool. This score is not intended as a mental disorder diagnosis, or as any type of healthcare recommendation.
